DAF Operating Principle

DAF Unit Design

A flotation unit is a tank with two working chambers, with an impeller located in the lower section.
The wastewater enters the working chamber through an injector. During impeller rotation and air injection, solid contaminants (debris, paint particles, polymer inclusions) are separated from the liquid, as well as cellulose fibers in paper slurry. The impeller is driven by an electric motor. In the upper part of the flotation unit, a scraper or similar mechanism removes the floated sludge into a sludge collection chamber.
The resulting flotation sludge, with a reduced content of foreign inclusions, is discharged by gravity or pumped into the next treatment stage.

How the System Works

Operating Principle of the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) Unit

The wastewater treatment process using a DAF unit consists of several stages:
Wastewater Pre-Treatment
Industrial wastewater undergoes preliminary coarse mechanical treatment, during which debris and large solid particles are removed.
Wastewater Feeding into the DAF Unit
Pre-treated wastewater enters the flotation unit, where it is mixed in a special chamber with water saturated with dissolved air supplied from the saturator.
Bubble Formation
When pressure drops inside the chamber, microscopic air bubbles form throughout the liquid volume. These bubbles attach to contamination particles and lift them to the surface, where a sludge layer forms.
Air-Water Mixture Flow Control
The recirculated air-water mixture flow typically equals 50% of the flotation unit capacity. If the contamination concentration increases, the recirculation flow supplied to the DAF unit automatically increases as well, ensuring the required treatment efficiency.
Sludge Removal
The sludge layer is continuously removed from the surface by a scraper mechanism:
  • the sludge enters the sludge collection tray;
  • then flows through a pipeline into a separate sludge tank.
Clean Water Discharge
After passing through the entire flotation chamber and being separated from floating contaminants, the treated water flows beneath the submerged partition wall into the clean water compartment and is discharged through the outlet pipeline.
Thus, the system operates in a continuous closed-cycle mode, ensuring efficient and uninterrupted wastewater treatment.
